Civil society organizations (CSOs) play a crucial role in promoting social well-being, defending rights, reducing inequalities, and strengthening democracy. The donation of resources is vital for the survival of these organizations, enabling them to continue their activities and achieve their goals.
Since March, however, when the first investment interruptions by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) were announced, we have witnessed successive funding cuts, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty. The abrupt nature of this process has impacted – and continues to impact – numerous organizations that relied on these resources for their survival.
In a context where resilience and adaptability are essential, the global network of organizations that and develop philanthropy, WINGS – Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker , launched the manifesto ‘Philanthropy’s solidarity with those impacted by aid cuts: A t Call to Action’, in solidarity with those affected. The document provides guidelines on how the philanthropic sector can offer during this challenging time, while also contributing to the strengthening of the collective impact ecosystem.
Among the proposed actions are: more flexible and long-term funding models; the promotion of positive narratives through data and stories that inspire social sector action within society; for community philanthropy mechanisms; funding of networks; and advocacy for a regulatory environment that enables the effective work of civil society organizations, among other structural topics that contribute to the sustainability of CSOs.
By endorsing this initiative, IDIS reaffirms its commitment to strengthening philanthropy and a Giving Culture, as well as to fostering a more resilient and autonomous civil society.
“I believe that collaboration and empathy among organizations are fundamental to facing current and future challenges. It is also important to protect the progress we have made so that we can continue generating positive impact,” emphasizes Paula Fabiani, CEO of IDIS.
As of early May, the manifesto has already been endorsed by 63 organizations from 27 countries. For more information about the manifesto and to become a signatory, visit the WINGS website.
